Southeastern Arizona
May 10-19, 2008

Perhaps it was the amazing looks at Elegant Trogan at a nest site in Cave Creek Canyon. Maybe the copulating Gray Hawks near Patagonia were to blame. A dozen species of hummingbird might have been a factor. We even celebrated Joan Thompson's 80th birthday. But it was probably the combination of the finest desert birds and a friendly group of birders that made the 2008 Arizona trip such a success.

We also saw Northern Pygmy Owls and Northern (Red-shafted) Flickers copulating. We found 17 species of flycatcher, including spectacular looks at Vermillion Flycatcher, not to mention Heidi Rich's stunning acheivement, perhaps a first in the annals of birding: seeing Tropical Kingbird and Thick-billed Kingbird each cough up a pellet. We found the nests of Broad-billed and Black-chinned hummingbirds, Verdin, Curve-billed Thrasher, Bell's Vireo and several others. Bryan's most memorable moments included knee-weakening looks at Prairie Falcon and Buff-breasted Flycatcher.
